Google has yet again achieved another landmark last month by leaving behind Microsoft’s Windows. Android has now made its place in the market by becoming the most used operating system on the web.

StatCounter an analytics firm claims that Google’s Android OS has finally beaten Microsoft Windows for the first time in terms of being the world’s most popular operating system (OS). These results are based on the comprehensive internet usage of desktops, laptops, tablets, smartwatches and mobile devices.

The report also states that in March, devices running on the Android platform accounted for a major portion of the overall internet usage market share with approximately 37.93%, sufficient enough to put it marginally ahead of Windows (37.91%).

Insights from StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen

StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen commented that “This is a milestone in the history of technology and probably the end of an era”  “It marks the expiration of Microsoft’s governance worldwide for the OS market which it has been holding since the 80s.  It also signifies a major step forward for Android which held just 2.4% of the international internet usage share only 5 years ago”

Nonetheless, Windows still leads as the undisputed global king of operating systems for the desktop market with an astonishingly 84% of the internet usage share in March 2017.

“Windows stood victorious in the desktop war but the battleground moved on. “It will be tough for Microsoft to make inroads in mobile devices but the next paradigm transference might give it the break it needs to recoup its supremacy. That could take place in the form of Continuum (a product that intends to substitute a desktop and a smartphone with a solitary Microsoft-powered phone), Voice, Augmented Reality or AI.

With android taking the lead, we are also expected to see a boost in Android Application Development in near future.
